Such sticks (they are made of wood, horn, bone, silver, lead, bronze and fired clay) were used in fate-based decisions, predictions and even in court cases to reach verdicts. In closed find contexts they always appear in pairs, but only one of the sticks is marked - usually on one of the ends.
