James I (1603-25), silver Penny, second coinage (1604-19), rose, beaded circles and legend surrounding, initial mark lis (1604-05) both sides, .I; D; G; ROSA. SINE. SPINA., rev. thistle, beaded circles and legend surrounding, TVEATVR. VNITA. DEVS, weight 0.38g (N.2106/1; S.2661). Toned with some porosity possibly from being once in the soil, otherwise practically very fine, an example of the first mint mark of this coinage and type.
The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "James, by the Grace of God, a rose without a thorn" and on the reverse as "May God guard these united."
