There are a large number of variants of Hildesheim Marienpfennigs - and new ones are still being discovered! The reason for the many variants is the annual coin renewals or coin declassifications that were common at that time. The old pennies are taken out of circulation and have to be exchanged for new ones. In order to prevent the exchange requirement from being circumvented, it was necessary to be able to quickly identify the declassified coins.
