A disc brooch from the Ottonian period. A great historical find for Burgau, as the town was first mentioned in documents 200 years later than the date of the find. Due to its condition and historical importance, I donated the brooch to the museum.
A really peculiar enamel disc brooch of the Frauenhofen type (large, south German-Eastern Alpine main variant with triangular cross arms) with the concentric rings in the middle instead of a smooth surface or a cross motif. Dating: first half of the 10th to 11th century. Definition of this brooch type: Jochen Giesler, Zu einer Gruppe historischen Enamelscheibenfibelen. Zeitschrift für Archäologie des Mittelalters 6, 1978, 57–72. Most recent and detailed treatment of this brooch type with distribution maps etc.: Volker Hilberg / J. Fried / B. Gratuze / S. Merkel / I. Pactat, Haithabu 983-1066. Die Ausgrabungen in Haithabu 19 (Munich 2022), 253-269. Has your brooch already been published somewhere?
